Abstract

The rapid development of technology has resulted in an online discussion forum. The online discussion forum is a forum for asynchronous discussions. The online discussion forum is a learning media that is easy to use in the learning process. In the learning process, the level of student participation becomes important because it affects the quality of learning. The purpose of this research is to find out how active students are in the learning process using an online discussion forum in the Canvas forum. Mixed methods were chosen to be used in this study. Data were analyzed numerically and then explained using paragraphs. The participants in this study were 55 students in the fifth semester of English Language Teaching for Young Learners class who used an online discussion forum in the form of Canvas in their learning process. To collect data, observation of student activities was carried out by checking several indicators of active student criteria. An open questionnaire was also administered to obtain more in-depth information. The researcher used google form as a tool to open the questionnaire. The open questionnaire was taken twice, for all class members and students in active and passive categories. An open questionnaire contains 15 questions according to the criteria of active students. There are 8 indicators to determine student activity. The results of the data obtained from observations were processed by finding the average using a formula. The data from the open questionnaire were processed by reducing the data, then categorized based on the existing indicators. The results showed that students who learn to use online discussion forums are classified as active. This can be seen from the results of observations which show that students meet the criteria and exceed 75% in 5 of 8 indicators. From the results of data collection, it can be concluded that how do students actively participate in providing comments and having discussions in written form using online discussion forums, namely by always participating in carrying out tasks, being involved in problem solving, students' efforts to seek various information from other sources, and efforts to solve problems. problems and apply learning outcomes.
