Abstract

This study discusses students' vocabulary acquisition strategies in the process of learning English at the university level. Especially the second semester students of Muhammadiyah University of Jember. This study suggests two research problems, the first is What strategies are used by second semester students of English education at Muhammadiyah University of Jember to acquire vocabulary when learning in class? and the second one is What strategies are used by second semester students of English education at Muhammadiyah University of Jember to acquire vocabulary when learning outside the classroom? The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the strategies used by the second semester students of English education at Muhammadiyah University of Jember in their English learning process. This research is a qualitative descriptive study with the subject of second semester students of English education at Muhammadiyah University of Jember using questionnaires and interview sheets starting on June 21, 2022 and ending on June 30, 2022. The findings show that the strategies used by the second semester students of English education at Muhammadiyah University of Jember when learning in class are Determination Strategies, Social Strategies, and Cognitive Strategies. While the strategies they use when learning outside the classroom are Determination strategies, Memory strategies, and Metacognitive Strategies.
