Abstract

Vocabulary is important to master the skills in learning English as a foreign language. Vocabulary is a list of alphabet that has meaning. Although vocabulary is a component of the English language, vocabulary is a basic of language to build language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To face this common problem there must be some ways and solutions to improve the students’ achievement through the available method, in this case the researcher used Stick Figures to improve vocabulary achievement. In this research, there are two problem, it is “How can the use of Stick Figures in Narrative Text Improve the VIII A Students’ Vocabulary Achievement at SMP Satya Dharma Balung Jember in the 2015/2016 Academic Year?”. Based on the theory the writer has hypothesis that the use of Stick Figures can improve the VIII A students’ Vocabulary Achievement at SMP Satya Dharma Balung Jember in the 2015/2016 academic year. The design of the research is classroom action research. This research was covered four stages of activities they are planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The implementing in cycle one was focused on introducing teaching with vocabulary and stick figures and the implementing in cycle two was focused on the teaching and learning process using stick figures media. The students were given a large vocabulary achievement test covering nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. The research subject is VIII A class which consist of 18 students and to obtain the research data instrument used test and observation. To calculate the students’ vocabulary achievement score, the researcher uses this formula: E= A/N X 100% The result of the score analysis, the percentage of students (≥70 was 66.66%) in the first cycle (≥70 was 83.33%). Based on those result, it could be concluded that the action in cycle two were successful. Therefore, it can be concluded that Stick Figures is very effective to be applied in increasing the students’vocabulary achievement.
