Abstract
Writing is one of the most important skills that English language students must master. Writing is a difficult skill to master due to a lack of vocabulary, grammar, and ideas. Teachers must teach students how to write descriptive text for them to learn English through online learning during covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct research entitled " Challenging Aspects of Teaching Writing Through Online Learning at Senior High School." The research design is a mixed method (Qualitative quantitative research). The data are collected using two types: (1) a Questionnaire about the challenging aspects in the form of a Google form application, and (2) Interviews with the teachers through Google meetings. This research is dealing with four respondents from two different schools. In this research, the problem is "what are the challenging aspects faced by English teachers in teaching writing descriptive text and how do they encounter them?". Based on the data, the teachers faced the same four aspects of challenges in teaching writing through online learning, there were poor communication, lack of motivation, lack of funds, and poor accessibility. To encounter the challenges, the teachers have some strategies. For poor communication and lack of motivation, they provide platforms and applications that could help teachers monitor and communicate well with the students, such as using google classroom and WhatsApp. The teachers also encourage them to ask if they do not understand the material or assignment by providing the teachers’ numbers so they can chat privately with the teachers. For lack of funds and accessibility mostly from internet data, such as cannot purchase the internet data and bad connection. The teachers gave students more time to complete the assignment and suggested they use the school's Wi-fi.
