Abstract

To understand a text, the teacher need strategy to help students understand the reading text. The strategy is used to find out whether the strategy can solve the problem of the phenomenon. One strategy that the researcher wants to introduce to students is narrow reading. Narrow reading occurs when students read a set of material that is similar such as a series of books by a single author. The purposes of the research are to investigate whether or not there is a significant effect of applying narrow reading on students` reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember. The research design used was experimental research and researchers used a two-group pre-test and post-test design. Before treatment, the sample was given a pretest. Then the treatment was carried out for 2 meetings. After that, the respondents were given the test again as a post-test. The research area chosen was SMAN Muhammadiyah 3 Jember. The samples were taken by cluster random sampling. There were 17 sample of class XI IPA 3 (experimental class) and 15 students of class XI IPA 2 (control class). Data were obtained by using 25 multiple-choice tests about narrative text stories. The result of the t-test shows that there is a significant effect on students' reading comprehension ability. Based on the data researcher found the results of the independent sample t-test of experimental class students with a sig value. (2-tailed) of 0.001 < 0.05 which means H0 has been rejected and H1 has been accepted. The average post-test of the experimental class was 86.82 and the average in the control class post-test was 75.20. From these data, it can be concluded that the study hypothesizes that there is an effect of using narrow reading on students' reading comprehension at eleventh grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember.
