Abstract
Reading is the process of students to getting information from written words on the printed page. But in fact students are always faced difficultness in reading test items. For example, students have known how to pronounce the words, but it occurred without understanding the meaning. Here, the writer take one of the strategies, is by using story pyramid. Because tory pyramid strategy can helps students to comprhending and organize their understanding to the text by using limited number of word. This research is intended to answer the problem about “How can story pyramid strategy improve the reading comprehension and students’ active participation in teaching learning process of Eight Grade students of SMP Islam Ambulu.” The writer has conducted a classroom action research. The tools of data collection was used written test and observation checklist that was done by the Enghlish teacher. In the first cycle, the teacher had difficulties in observing the students. There were many students didn’t really know how to fill in each line of story pyramid worksheet because they must be use limited number of words to fill in each line. The result of reading test showed 54% of 35 of students achieve the target score ≤65, and the means score was 80. The result of observation checklist showed that only 48% of students became active participation. It means that the action in cycle 1 was not successful. Therefore, the action was necessary to continue to the next cycle. In the second cycle, the students asked to make a group consist of 6-7 students and researcher give jumble words to helps students to fill in each line of story pyramid worksheet easier. The result of speaking test, was showed that students who got score ≥65 up to 77% and the means score was 85. The result of observation checklist showed that 71% of them became active participation. It means the action in cycle 2 was successful and the action was stopped. Based on these findings can be conclude that the application story pyramid strategy can improve students’ reading comprehension and active participation of eight grade students SMP Islam Ambulu.
