Abstract

Reading is an essential skill for students at all levels starting from elementary school to university. Reading is one skill which has many contributions in enhancing and enriching students’ knowledge. Reading Comprehension is the core of reading activity. By having comprehension, the students are able to make sense of what the texts tell about, and the purpose is to understand the written language. The problem of this research is “how can the use of Scaffolding Reading Experience (SRE) Strategy improve the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMPN 1 Jelbuk in 2014/2015 academic year?” and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how the use of Scaffolding Reading Experience (SRE) Strategy can improve the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMPN 1 Jelbuk in the 2014/2015 academic year. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the action hypothesis of this research is described as follows: The use of Scaffolding Reading Experience (SRE) Strategy can improve the eighth grade students’ reading comprehension of recount text by giving some activities that can make the students active and work at much higher level than is possible on their own at SMPN 1 Jelbuk in the 2014/2015 academic year. This research was done in two cycles in CAR (Classroom Action Research). The data was taken from observation, interview and test. The research was conducted to the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Jelbuk in Jember. The finding of this research indicated that the application of “Scaffolding Reading Experience (SRE)” strategy was able to improve students’ reading comprehension of recount text in the eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Jelbuk by giving some activities that can make the students active and work at much higher level than is possible on their own. It was shown by the target percentage of the research that was 75% of the students got ≥70 has been achieved. In Cycle I the students who scored ≥70 was 56,66%, it means there were only 17 of 30 students who reached the target score, but in Cycle II the students who scored ≥70 was increased become 76,66%. It means there were 23 of 30 students could reached the target score of reading comprehension.
