Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. In this research, the students especially Seventh Grade have difficulties in writing a short text in terms of organizing their ideas and mastering tenses. Based on the problem above, it was important to overcome the student problems, so that the students writing ability could be improved. It is a suitable strategy in teaching writing used of Mind Map strategy. In this research, the problems are “Can Mind Map strategy improves the seventh grade students’ writing ability at Mts Al Faruq Grujugan Bondowoso in the academic year 2014/2015”. And the purposes this research are to know the use of Mind Map strategy can improve the Seventh Grade students’ writing descriptive text achievement at Mts Al Faruq Grujugan Bondowoso in the academic year 2014/2015. The design of the research is classroom action research. This research covered four stages of activities. They were planning of the action, implementing of the action, observing, and reflecting of the action. The implementing of the action in cycle one was asking the students to make writing descriptive text based on the Mind Map strategy and the implementing of the action in cycle two was asking the students to write descriptive text based on the Mind Map strategy in front of the class. The subject of this research was VII class of Mts Al Faruq Grujugan Bondowoso in the academic year 2014/2015. In this research, the primary data were collected from the writing test by using Mind Map strategy and from the observation during the teaching learning process. That based on the result of writing test in cycle one shows that the percentage of the students who got score 70 was 48%. And in cycle two, it improved to be 79%. In addition, the average result of the students’ active participation was 50% in cycle one. In cycle two, the average result of the students’ active participation indicated improvement that was 75%. Finally, the use of Mind Map strategy could improve seven year students’ writing descriptive text achievement and students’ active participation in teaching learning process at Mts Al Faruq Grujugan Bondowosoin the academic year 2014/2015.
