Abstract

Writing is considered as a difficult skill to be mastered. A writer should consider some aspect such us a grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, organization, and content. Based on the information from the English teacher of SMP Islam Ambulu and classroom observation, the students in class VIII A had the most problem in writing. The students had difficulties in generating ideas, grammatical structure, expanding their vocabulary, and making good composition. Also they lack of motivation during teaching learning process. Therefore, it is important to do a research entitle “Improving Writing on Recount Text by Using Mind Mapping Technique of the Eighth Grade Students”. In this research, the problem are “How can the use of mind mapping technique improve the eighth grade students’ writing on recount text at SMP Islam Ambulu in the 2014/2015 academic year?” and “How can the use of mind mapping technique encourage the eighth grade students’ active participation in writing class at SMP Islam Ambulu in the 2014/2015 academic year?”. The objective of the research referring to the research problem is to find out how the use of mind mapping technique can improve students’ writing recount text. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research are described as follows: “The use of mind mapping technique can improve the eighth grade students’ writing achievement at SMP Islam Ambulu in the 2014/2015 academic year by generating and expanding their ideas” and “The use of mind mapping technique can encourage the eighth grade students’ participation at SMP Islam Ambulu in the 2014/2015 academic year because it’s fun and make the students enthusiast in following the teaching learning process”. The design of this research is classroom action research. The subject of the research is VIII A class consists of 35 students. The data were collected by using writing test (subjective) and observation checklist. Observation checklist were used to get data whether the students active or not in the classroom during teaching learning process. The action in cycle two, the researcher used media projector to show the form mind map in detail. All of the students were active, and they felt more enjoyable and interested in teaching learning process. Mind mapping technique improved the students’ writing on recount text in cycle two from the percentage of students scored > 73 (E=60%) in Cycle 1 to (E=80%) in Cycle 2. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that mind mapping technique is able to improve writing on recount text at SMP Islam Ambulu in the 2014/2015 academic year by generating and expanding their ideas and also its fun and make the students enthusiast.
