Abstract

Key words: Reading Comprehension, TELLS (Title, Examine, Look, Look, and Setting) strategy. Reading is one of the important skills in teaching English. In this research, the students especially class X had difficulties in reading comprehension because they were lack of vocabulary. Based on the problem above, it was important to overcome the student problems, so that the students reading comprehension could be improved. A suitable strategy in teaching reading is using of TELLS strategy. In this research, the problem is “How can the use of TELLS strategy improve the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension at SMK Islam AshShuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year?”. And the purpose of this research is to know how the TELLS strategy is able to improve the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension at SMK Islam Ash-Shuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year. The design of the research is classroom action research. The research subject is X TB(tatabusana) class consisting of 29 students. The data are collected using objective test. In order to analyze the data students’ reading comprehension score, percentage formula is used. The implementation of TELLS strategy was conducted in groups. The researcher made groups that consisted of various students’ ability. In this research was stop in cycle two. All of students were interesting doing this strategy because it helped students activate their background knowledge. Those caused the result of cycle two achieved the criteria of success. TELLS strategy improve students’ reading comprehension in two cycle from the percentage of students scored ≥75 (E=48.28%) in cycle I to (E=79.31%) in cycle 2. Finally, it could be concluded that the use of TELLS strategy could improve the tenth grade students’ reading comprehension at SMK Islam AshShuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year.
