Abstract

Key Word: Reading Comprehension, Recount text and The Question – Answer Relationship (QAR) Strategy All skills of English are important. One of them is Reading. It also becomes a skill that is should be mastered by the students when they are studying English. However, many students find reading as one of the difficulties activity in learning English because of they do not know about the content and the meaning of such word while they are reading an English book especially recount text, is a piece of text that retells past events. Therefore, it is important to do a research entitled “Improving the Eight Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension of Recount Text Through QAR”. In this research, the problem is “how can QAR strategy improve the eight grade students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember in the academic year 2014/2015?” and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how QAR can improve students’ reading comprehension of recount text. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research is described as follows: The use of the QAR strategy could improve students’ reading comprehension of recount text in the eight grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember in the academic year 2014/2015. The design of this research is classroom action research. The reseach subject is VIII B class consisting of 33 students. The data are collected using test method, and the instrument used is test items. In order to analyze the data of students’ reading score, percentage formula is used. The implementation of QAR strategy was revised in the way how the teacher forced them to think deeply and seriously, the student could give high attention to the teacher’s explanation, they seemed active in answering the given questions and know how to apply QAR strategy by identifying Right there, think and search and author and you questions. QAR strategy improved the students’ reading comprehension of recount text in two cycles from the average of students scored ≥ 72 (64.67) in Cycle 1 to (77.45) in Cycle 2. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that QAR strategy is able to improve the students’ reading comprehension of recount text at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember in the academic year 2014/2015.
