Abstract

Writing is the act of elaborating, creating ideas in written form, the message that you write must be comprehensible to readers because you have only words and punctuation when you produce writing. However, many students find writing as one of the difficult skills in English. They are difficult to elaborate their ideas in written a recount paragraph with appropriate grammar, vocabulary, mechanics and organization. In this research, the problem is “How can the use of Roundtable Technique improve the students’ writing ability and students’ active participation at SMP Negeri 1 Jombang in the 2014/2015 academic year?” The hypothesis of the research is “Using roundtable technique can improve the eighth grade student’s writing recount text and students’ active participation at SMP Negeri 1 Jombang in the 2014/2015 academic year. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is VIII D that consists of 33 students. Test and observation checklist are used to obtain the data. The aspects of scoring writing test are grammar, vocabulary, mechanics and organization. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedure of the action research: preliminary study, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The finding showed that the students’ writing ability was 61% in Cycle 1 and 82% in Cycle 2. The observation result from 43% of students’ activeness in Cycle 1 and 75% of students’ activeness in Cycle 2. Based on the result of this research, the use of roundtable technique can help students in writing recount text and build their responsibility. The criteria of success was 82%, it is concluded that the use of roundtable technique was able to improve the eighth grade students’ writing ability at SMP Negeri 1 Jombang in the 2014/2015 academic year by giving opportunity to the students to write their responses related to the topic, discussing about recount text that given from the teacher, and answering the question based on the given passage.
