Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. In this research, especially the tenth grade students have difficulty in writing English. They are difficult to organize or develop their ideas in written a descriptive text with appropriate grammar, mechanic, organization, and vocabulary. Based on the problem above, it was important to overcome the student problems. A suitable technique in teaching writing is spidergram. Because in spidergram technique, students can organize their idea and knowledge and it make students interest and motivation before they write into text. In this research, the general problem is “How can the use of spidergram improve the tenth grade students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at SMK Islam Ash Shuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year”. The research objective is intended to know; how spidergram technique is able to improve the tenth grade students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at SMK Islam Ash Shuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year. The design of the research is classroom action research. The research subject is the tenth grade students at SMK Islam Ash Shuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year. The data that apply in this research is writing achievement in descriptive text. In the first cycle showed that from 34 students, the percentage was 59% of 34 students and the means score was 66. It said that the action in cycle 1 was not successful. Therefore, the action was necessary to continued to the next cycle. And in cycle two, the percentage of students who got score ≥70 was 79% and the means score was 71. In other words, the action in cycle 2 was successful and the action stopped. In addition, the average result of the students’ active participation was 60.5% in cycle one. In cycle two, the average result of the students’ active participation indicated improvement that was 76.5%. Finally, the use of Spidergram technique could improve tenth grade students’ achievement in writing descriptive text and could improve the tenth grade students’ active participation in teaching learning process at SMK Islam Ash Shuufiyah Kencong in the 2014/2015 academic year.
