Abstract

Key Word: Summary Writing, Story Pyramid Writing is one of the four language skill which should be mastered by the students to complete their ability of English besides speaking, listening, and reading. However, the students are lacked of writing practice. They still had difficulty to construct the ideas to write. Therefore, it is important to do a research entitled “Improving Students’ Summary Writing Ability Through The Use of Story Pyramid”. In this research the problem is “How can the use of story pyramid improve the tenth year students’ summary writing ability at SMAN 1 Tegaldlimo in The 2014/2015 Academic Years?” and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how the use of story pyramid can improve the tenth year students’ summary writing ability. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of the research is described as follow: The use of story pyramid can improve the tenth year students’ summary writing ability at SMAN 1 Tegaldlimo in the 2014/2015 academic year because story pyramid serve the outline of the point of the text which makes it easy for the students to write or summarize a text. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research object is X class consisting of 31 students. The data are collected using test method and the instrument used is test items. In order to analyze the data of students’ summary writing score, precentage formula is used. The implementation of story pyramid was done individually at the first cycle and in pairs at the second cycle. All of the students were easier to write because story pyramid help them to construct the idea when they write, so that most of them were active in the teaching and learning activity. Those caused the result of cycle two achieved the criteria of succes. Story pyramid improve the students’ summary writing ability in two cycles from the percentage of the students scoring ≥73 was 56.66% in cycles 1 to 80.65% in cycle 2. Based on the result it can be concluded that the use of story pyramid can improve the tenth year students’ summary writing ability at SMAN 1 Tegaldlimo in the 2014/2015 academic year because story pyramid serve the outline of the point of the text which makes it easy for the students to write or summarize a text.
