Abstract

Reading is a fundamental skill, purposeful and active process. It can be challenging when students are facing unfamiliar and complex topics. Furthermore, for some students who interested in reading, comprehension can be more challenging. Students may understand the words separately, but putting them together into the meaningful ideas often is not easy as it should. The subject of this study often unconvinced to select information within the text. In their mind, all information they have found, it should be written. Thus, the researcher intends to help them simplifying their difficulties. The researcher wants to improve the students’ reading comprehension ability through a comprehension strategy. From several comprehension strategies, the researcher applies Synthesizing Strategy as the suitable teaching strategy. The problem of the study is formulated as “how can Synthesizing Strategy improve the eleventh grade students' reading comprehension ability at Madrasah Aliyah an-Nur Bangsalsari Jember in the academic year 2014/2015?” In line with the problem of the study, the objective is to find out “how the use of Synthesizing Strategy can improve the eleventh grade students' reading omprehension ability at Madrasah Aliyah an-Nur Bangsalsari Jember in the academic year 2014/2015”. Based on the research problem and relevant theory, the hypothesis of the study can be described as follows: “Synthesizing strategy can improve the eleventh grade students’ reading comprehension ability at MA an-Nur Bangsalsari, Jember in 2014/2015 academic year”. The design of this study is classroom action research. The respondents are the eleventh grade consisting of 24 students. The research instrument that had been used is the test namely the subjective test which had been trial the validity and reliability of test and also the field notes for observation the learning activity of the students and teacher related to the synthesizing strategy. Synthesizing Strategy could improve the students’ reading comprehension ability in two cycles from students’ mean score of cycle 1 and 2; 69. 07 and 70.83, and the percentage of Achievement Target 1 and 2 were 58.33 % and 66.67 %. Thus, there was significant impact of each cycle implementation on the students’ reading comprehension ability. Thus, the conclusion of this study can be stated that synthesizing strategy intrinsically could improve students’ reading comprehension ability.
