Abstract

Speaking is one of important skills of English language. Related to the condition and situation in VIII class, the average students get difficulty in speaking class. Considering that problem, teaching speaking was applied by using mingle game to improve the students’ speaking ability. The problem in this research is how can the use of Mingle game improve students’ speaking ability of eighth grade at MTs Al-Ma’arif Pujer Bondowoso in 2014/2015 academic year? The purpose of this research is to improve students’ speaking ability of eighth grade by using mingle game at MTs Al-Ma’arif Pujer Bondowoso in 2014/2015 academic year. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research is described as follows: Mingle game improves the eighth grade students’ speaking ability at MTs Al-Ma’arif Pujer Bondowoso in 2014/2015 academic year by retelling the story. The design of this research is classroom action research which has four steps, those are: planning, implementing, observing, reflecting. To collect data, speaking test was used to get data about students’ speaking ability, and observation checklist was to know the students’ active participation in teaching learning process. The criterion of success in this research is the action are considered successful if the score of students achieved the minimum standard score ≥70 with the mean score at least 70. Based on the result of speaking test in cycle 1, there were 12 students who achieve the target score ≥70. It is caused the students couldn’t retell the story correctly, they feel confuse how to do that. Therefore, the action in the cycle 2 needed to be conducted in order to improve students’ speaking ability by using mingle game. Based on the result of speaking test in cycle 2, there were 18 students who achieve ≥70 with the mean score 75. In cycle 2 the researcher explains more clearly about the material in order to make the students understand how to retell story. Besides, the researcher makes the students enjoy during the lesson by playing the game. It can be concluded that Mingle game is able to improve the students’ speaking ability at MTs al-Ma’arif Pujer Bondowoso in 2014/2015 academic year.
