Abstract

Reading comprehension is the most important aspect of learning English that students must master. However, many students find reading as one of the problems that they face when they want to learn English. Therefore, it is important to do research entitled “The Use of Picture Storybooks to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension”. In this research, the problem is "How can Picture Storybooks improve student’s reading comprehension?" and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how Picture Storybooks can improve reading comprehension. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research is described as follows: Picture Storybooks can improve students’ reading comprehension. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is grade III students consisting of 22 students. The data are collected using a reading test, and the instrument used is test item items. In order to analyze the data on students' reading scores, the mean formula is used. The researcher used a score of 75 as an average score so that there was a clear improvement after the application of the learning method. If the students' score reaches 75 or more, then this research is considered to be successful. The implementation of Picture Storybooks was combined with small group discussions. Students can share their ideas with their group. All of the students were active in the teaching and learning activities, and they didn’t feel bored again. Picture Storybooks improved the students' reading comprehension in two cycles from the class's mean score ≥75 (72.04) in Cycle I to (81.81) in Cycle II. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that Picture Storybooks can improve the students' reading comprehension at SDN Wirowongso 1 Jember in the 2023/2024 academic year by using small group discussions.
