Abstract
This study investigates the effectiveness of picture series media in enhancing students’ writing skills, particularly in writing recount texts. The research was conducted to address the problem of whether the use of picture series media can significantly affect students’ writing performance. The objective was to determine the extent to which this visual-based media can serve as an effective tool to support students in generating ideas and applying accurate grammar in their writing. The hypothesis proposed that students taught with picture series media would demonstrate more effective writing outcomes compared to those taught using student worksheets.
The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental group that received instruction using picture series and a control group that was taught using student worksheets. Students’ writing was evaluated through pre-tests and post-tests using a rubric adapted from Brown, focusing on content development and grammatical accuracy.
The findings revealed that students who were exposed to picture series media showed more effective development in their writing skills. They were able to organize their ideas more clearly, use more accurate grammatical structures, and construct more coherent texts. These outcomes support theories such as Dual Coding Theory and Multimedia Learning Theory, which emphasize the benefits of combining visual and verbal inputs in the learning process. The study concludes that picture series media is an effective instructional tool for enhancing students’ writing skills in English, particularly in the context of recount text writing
