Improving Students’ Writing Ability of Recount Text and Active Participation through Group-Project Method of the eight grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari in academic year 2019-2020. Thesis. English Education Program. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember. Advisors: (1) Dr. Tanzil Huda, M.Pd. (2) Indri Astutik, M.Pd. Key word: writing, writing ability, recount text, active participation, group, project method. Writing is one of the skills that are important for students to learn. Writing is often considered the most difficult skill. However, there are many students find writing is not fun, attractive and easy. In this research, the researcher focuses on students’ writing ability of recount text and active participation in learning process. Thus, the research under the title “Improving Students’ Writing Ability of Recount Text and Active Participation through Group-Project Method” is held. The problems of this research were “How can the Group-Project Method improve the students writing ability of recount text of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari in academic year 2019/2020?” and “How can the Group-Project Method improve the students’ active participant during English class in the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari academic year 2019/2020?” The objectives of this research were intended to know how Group-Project Method can improve students writing ability of recount text of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari in academic year 2019/2020.and to know how Group-Project Method can improve students’ active participation in writing class of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari academic year 2019/2020. The design of this research is classroom action research (CAR). This design is consisting of four phases within one cycle; those are planning, acting, observing, and then reflecting. The subject of the research is students in 8A SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari consisting of 28 students. The data is collected by holding a writing test and collaborating with the English teacher as the observer to produce the observation checklist and field note. This research found that group-project method could improve students’ writing ability of recount text and active participation of eighth grade at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari in academic year 2019/2020. It was proven by the calculation score of the test and the observation checklist which had been improved. The result of students’ test score improved from 54% to 79% of students who get ≥ 70 and the average result of students’ active participation improved from 52% to 77. Therefore, the criteria of success had been fulfilled. The criteria of success in this research were there must be 70% of students get score minimum 70 in writing test of recount text and at least 70% of students active participating in the class. Based on the research result, it can be conclude that Group-Project Method was able to improve students’ writing ability of recount text and active participation of the eight grade students at SMP Negeri 01 Tlogosari in academic year 2019/2020.
