Abstract

Key Words : Close Reading, Reading Comprehension Reading was one of the required skill that should be developed in learning English. Reading without comprehension was nothing. Readers or students should understand the meaning of the text or passage that they read to knew what the purpose which author wrote in that text. the teacher has to used appropriate, fun, and effective strategy in teaching and learning reading. One of the strategy that can be used in teaching and learning reading was close reading strategy.Close reading was a strategy that guided students to found out the keys idea and generic structure of the text or paragaph. Close reading strategy also train students to comprehend a paragraph deeply. This research was aimed to knew the effect of close reading on students’ reading comprehension. This research also aimed to found out wheter students who taught by using close reading can increased their understanding in analyzing narrative text well or not rather than the students who taught by lecturering method. The problem of this research “Was there s was there significant effect of close reading strategy on reading comprehension ability of tenth grade students’ at SMAN 1 Kapongan in the 2017/2018 academic years?” This kind of this research was quasi-experimental. The researcher took 48 students of tenth grade at SMAN 1 Kapongan, Situbondo as the subject. This research used design 9. It was non-randomized pretest-posttest control group design. The tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Kapongan devided into 4 classes. But, the researcher only took two classes as research subject, there are 24 students in X IPA 1 and 24 student in X IPA 2. X IPA 1 as an experimental group and X IPA 2 as a control group. After collecting data, the researcher will tested the test by using t-test formula in SPSS program. The result of this reserch showed that level of significance was > 0.05. the sig.(2-tailed) in the t-test was 0.03. It means that the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It proved that the close reading strategy that gave an effect on students’ reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Kapongan in the 2017/2018 academic years. Based on the result, it can be concluded that there was significant effect of close reading strategy on students’ reading comprehension. It means that, close reading strategy can increased students comprehension in their reading abilty.
