Abstract

Reading plays an important role in learning English because reading is a bridge to understand the English text books and other knowledge sources written in English. Unfortunately, not all students have a good reading ability. There were some fact that indicated the problem. First, students cannot understand the text well because they are lack of vocabulary. Second, need too long time to understand the text, and do not know how to make conclusion from the text. Finally, the students had difficulties to do the exercise. To face this problem there must be some ways and solutions to improve the students’ reading comprehension through the available teaching method, in this case the researcher used One stay three stray method to improve reading comprehension by creating cooperative learning environment such as sharing information about the text from group to another group. In this research the problem is “How can the use of one stay three stray method improve students’ reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember in the 2017/2018 academic year?” The objective of this research referring to the research problem is to know how one stay three stray method can improve students’ reading comprehension at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember in 2017/2018 academic year. The design of the research is Classroom Action Research: which uses reading test and observation guide as the instrument of the research. The subject of the research is the X grade students which has 32 students. The result of reading test data in cycle 1 was showed that from 14 students, who have scored ≥ 75 was 44%. Meanwhile, the result of observation checklist showed 55.18% students’ active. It means the result did not achieved the target score. The researcher needs to revise lesson plan or strategy in cycle 2. All activities done with the balance partner and having two clockwise around the room. In cycle 2 there were 28 students of the students who scored ≥ 75 was 86%. Beside that, the result of observation checklist was 77.08% students’ active. It means the target score in reading test achieved the target score. The action was stopped because requirement 75% students reading test could be achieved the target scored and active participation. It can be concluded that using One stay three stray method can improve the students’ reading comprehension by creating cooperative learning environment such as sharing information about the text from group to another group at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Jember in 2017/2018 academic year.
