Abstract

Reading is one component that is useful for language acquisition, as long as students are more or less understand what they read, the more they often to read, so that way, they would better understand what they read. Based on the conducted preliminary study at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo, the students got difficult in comprehending the meaning of every word, sentence, paragraph in the text. Besides, the students were not active enough while the teacher was teaching them a reading material. The problems of this research were: (1) How can the use of Teams Game Tournament improve the Eight Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension by Using Teams Game Tournament at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo in the 2017/2018 Academic Year? (2) How can the use of Teams Game Tournament improve the Eight Grade Students’ participation by Using Teams Game Tournament at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo in the 2017/2018 Academic Year? This research aimed: (1) to know whether Teams Game Tournament improve the Eight Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension by Using Teams Game Tournament at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo in the 2017/2018 Academic Year?, (2) to know whether Teams Game Tournament improve the Eight Grade Students’ participation by Using Teams Game Tournament at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo in the 2017/2018 Academic Year? The type of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was done in two cycles which consisted of planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting in each cycle. The subject of this research was the students of Eight grade students at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo totaling 25 students. The research instruments used were reading test and observation checklist of the students’ active participation. Based on the research result, there was no improvement of students’ reading test (56%) and active participation (52%) in cycle 1. Then, the research was continued to the cycle 2 by revising the lesson plan and modifying the teaching and learning activity. It was got the results that there was improvement of students’ reading test (80%) and active participation (88%) in cycle 2. Therefore, it could be concluded that the Teams Game Tournament can improve the eight grade students’ reading comprehension and participation at SMP 17 Agustus 1945 Tegaldlimo in the 2017/2018 academic year.
