Abstract

Reading comprehension is the activity to elaborate the content of the text which has been read by someone. In addition, reading for comprehension is the primary purpose for reading; raising student awareness of main ideas in a text and exploring the organization of a text are essential for good comprehension. The students are expected to be able to understand what they are reading in their daily life. Therefore, it is important to do a research entitled “A descriptive Study on Literal Reading Comprehension Achievement of the seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Rambipuji in the 2017/2018 academic year” The research was conducted in SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Rambipuji. This research used descriptive research. The purpose of this research was to describe the reading comprehension achievement on literal reading. In this research, the problem “what is the literal reading comprehension ability of finding main idea and specific details of the seventh year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Rambipuji in the 2017/2018 academic year” the objectives of this research are to describe the seventh grade student literal reading comprehension of finding main idea and specific details at SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Rambipuji. The research design used is descriptive quantitative. The research subject is VII class consisting of 31 students. The data are collected using test method, and the instrument used is test items. The reading comprehension test was administered to obtain primary data about the students’ reading comprehension, and documentation were collection to obtain supporting data. The primary data was analyzed statistically in the form of percentage. Based on the calculation, the seventh grade students reading comprehension achievement on literal reading was 71.21% and the result could be categorized as “good”. It could be concluded that literal reading comprehension ability of the first year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 3 Rambipuji in the academic years 2017/2018.
