Abstract

Key Words: Pandhalungan Culture, Sophomore Students, Pronunciation This research aimed to analyze the influence of Pandhalungan culture toward sophomore’s students in Jember. The objective of this current research was to find out how the students get influenced to Pandhalungan culture during their learning English pronunciation. The results of this study were expected to give benefits for the readers. The researcher used descriptive qualitative. Qualitative research is the collection, analysis, and interpretation of comprehensive narrative and visual data to gain insights into a particular phenomenon of interest. The subject of this research were students of Universitas Muhammdiyah Jember and Universitas Jember who had been participating in this research. The data were collected by giving questionnaire or Google Form to all students from both universities. The researcher also collecting the data from respondent’s pronunciation to students in order to strengthen the data. The data from questionnaire were analyzed by calculation, each statement presented the percentage of students’ response to all statements given. Then, students interview data were transcribed and classified into four aspects related on how the influence of Pandhalungan culture in Jember. The students are originally from Javanese and Madurese background. The results of this research, the researcher focused on four factors which are; attitude, motivation, age, and instruction. Then, those four factors bring a lot of misplaces to their pronunciation such as intonation and word-stress. Most of students were having difficult situation on how they control volume, force, pitch-change, and syllable length. Then, it can be concluded that Pandhalungan culture influence students in order to learn English pronunciation in Jember.
