Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the language components that is very important in
learning English, because mastering vocabulary is helpful to make
communication run effectively. But relate to the condition and situation right now,
the students in the seventh grade still have less vocabulary in the class. It caused
they did not interest with the lesson and they bored with the way of learning that
monotonous and no teaching media in learning process so the students did not
interest to learn the lesson. In this case the researcher used Word Chart to improve
vocabulary achievement.
And the design of this research is class room action research. In this
research, the problem is “How can Word Chart improve the seventh grade
students’ vocabulary achievement at SMP 1 Sukosari-Bondowoso in the
2011/2012 academic year”. The hypothesis of the research is The use of Word
Chart can improve the seventh grade students’ vocabulary achievement at SMP 1
Sukosari-Bondowoso in the 2011/2012 Academic year. And the research subject
is VII B class which is consist 30 students and to obtain the research data used test
and abservation.
And area of the research was chosen because of some reasons: (1) Word
Chart never been used by the English teacher as teaching media in teaching
vocabulary. (2) seventh grade students at SMPI Sukosari, Bondowoso difficulties
in vocabulary mastery.
To calculate the students vocabulary score, the researcher uses this formula:

The observation checklist in teaching learning in cycle one 48.45% students
active in the class and there are 51.55% passive in the class. And cycle two
80.8% students active in the class and there are 19.16 % passive in the class. It
means that the requirement of 75% of the student active involvement in the
teaching learning process is fulfilled. And the result of the score analysis,
( M=5.713) in the first cycle to (M=69.76) in the second cycle and the percentage
of students in cycle one ( ≥65 is 60%) in the second cycle to ( ≥65 is 86.67%).iii
And it can be concluded that after teaching-learning English by using word chart,
the vocabualry achievement of the seventh grade students of B class is improved
