Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills which must be mastered by the
Students in learning English.However, many students find speaking as one
of the problem that they face when they want to learn English. Therefore,
it is important to do research entitled “Improving the Eighth Grade Students
Speaking Skill By Using Telling Story Through TBL at smpn 01 grujugan in the
2016/2017 academic year”.
In this research, the problem is “how can the use of telling story through
Task-based Learning improve speaking skill of the eighth grade students at SMPN
01 Grujugan Bondowoso in the 2016 / 2017 academic year?” and the objective of
this research referring to the research problem is to find out how Task-based
Learning can improve speaking ability. Based on the research and the relevant
theory the second grade students describe as follows:
The design of this research is classroom action research. The research
subject is eighth grade class consisting of 25 students. The data are collected using
interview, direct observing and test and instrument used is test items. In order to
analyze the data students’ speaking score, average score formula is used.
In designing a TBL lesson, teachers should first identify what standards
or outcomes they want their students to know by the time they reach a viable
conclusion to the problem. By first knowing what outcomes teachers want from
15their students, teachers can then choose or develop a problem that allows students
to successfully reach those assigned standards or outcomes. There are many
resources teachers can use in developing a problem for a TBL lesson. All of the
students were active in teaching and learning activities and enthusiastic does it.
Those caused the result of cycle two achieved the criteria of success. Task-based
Learning improved the students’ speaking ability in two cycles average scored of
student is 69 in cycle 1 to 80 in cycle 2.
Based on the research result, It can be concluded that Task-based
Learning is able to improve speaking ability at SMPN 01 Grujugan Bondowoso
in the 2016/2017 academic year it was done by using TBL such as divide the
student into some goups, one group consistof 4/5 students, the student analyze the
story and discuss with their group and tell that story one by one in front of the
class, and by giving them some story of narrative text, they become more active in
the teaching and learning process and they can share their opinion with good
speaking.
