Abstract

This study proposes two research questions. First, what are the difficulties faced by the students in translating news item text from English to Indonesia. Second, what factors make it difficult for students to translate news texts from English to Indonesia. This study to describe the difficulties faced by the students in translating news item text from English to Indonesia. And also, to examine the factors make it difficult for students to translate news texts from English to Indonesia. Descriptive qualitative research was used in this study because the data in this study were presented in the form of words rather than numbers and were discussed descriptively. This study obtain data in the form of the students' translation test score and students' interview answer. This study will focus on the students' difficulties and its factors in translating English news items text to Indonesian. The participants of the study were 23 students of English department in University of Muhammadiyah Jember . The results showed that the 8th semester students at the University of Muhammadiyah Jember experienced difficulties in translating News Item text from English to Indonesian. It can be concluded from research results and discussion that there are five different scores that students got. That scores are from the accumulation from the three aspects measured, there are accuracy, readable, and acceptable. Based on these scores, students' difficulties factor in translating News Item text are linguistic factor and non-linguistic factor. It is expected that this research can contribute to provide empirical evidence and support theories related to this research later. And also can give an input or evaluation of what needs to be improved by teachers for the students' comprehension.
