Abstract

Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. It is useful for a range of teaching purposes, which will vary, depending on the developmental stage and the needs of the students. One of the reasons is that more and more people need to learn writing in English for occupational or academic purposes. In this research, the students especially class VII hare difficulties in writing a short text in terms of organizing their ideas and mastering tenses. Based on the problem above, it was important to overcome the student problems, so that the students writing ability could be improved. Suitable media in teaching writing is picture series. In this research, the problem is “how can the use of picture series improve seventh grade students’ ability in writing procedure text at SMPN 1 Arjasa in the 2014/2015 academic year”. And the purpose of this research is to know how the use of picture series can improve seventh grade students’ ability in writing procedure text. The design of the research is classroom action research. This research covered four stages of activities. They are planning of the action, implementing of the action, observing, and reflecting of the action. The implementing of the action in cycle one was asking the students to write procedure text based on the picture series and the implementing of the action in cycle two was same that is asking the students to write procedure text based on the picture series. The subject of this research was class VIIE of SMPN 1 Arjasa in the 2014/2015 academic year. In this research, the primary data were collected from the writing test by using picture series and from the observation during the teaching learning process. The result of writing test in cycle one shows that the percentage of the students who got score 75 or more was 74%. And in cycle two, it was improved to be 79%. In addition, the result of the students’ active participation was 63% in cycle one. In cycle two, the result of the students’ active participation indicated improvement that was 77%. Based on those result, it could be concluded that the action in cycle two were successful. Finally, it could be said that the use of picture series could improve the seventh grade students’ ability in writing procedure text and could improve the seventh grade students’ active participation in teaching learning process at SMPN 1 Arjasa in the 2014/2015 academic year.
