Abstract

Writing is an important skill to be mastered by students to communicate in written language when they are studying English. Even though writing is an essential skill to be acquire, many students have difficulties in mastering writing especially for EFL students in Indonesia. Therefore, the researchers is interested in conducting an experimental research entitled “The Effect of Using Photographs on Students’ Writing Ability”. In this research, the problem is “is there any significant difference on students’ writing ability between those who are taught by using photographs and those who are not taught by using photographs?” and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out whether there is any significant difference on students’ writing ability between those who are taught by using photographs and those who are not taught by using photographs. Based on the related literature, the hypothesis of this experimental research is formulated as “there is any significant difference on students’ writing ability between those who are taught by using photographs and those who are not taught by using photographs at MTs Al-Qodiri 1 Jember in the 2018/2019 academic year” The kind of this research is experimental research while the design of this research is quasi-experimental research in which the researcher does not need to randomize the subject research. The sample of the research are VIII B as an experimental group and VIII D as a control group. Each classes consist of 18 students. The data are collected using two writing test, they are pre-test and post-test. Whereas, to find the differences between experimental and control group, t-test is used. After the data were tested and found to be homogeneous variance and distribution of the data is normal, the hypothesis was tested using Independent Sample T-Test in SPSS showed that the significant values is 0.000. Those value is lower than significance level of 5% which means that Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected. So, Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. From those analysis result, it can be concluded that there is significant difference of using photographs on students’ writing ability between those who are taught by using photographs and those who are not taught by using photographs at MTs Al-Qodiri 1 Jember in the 2018/2019 academic year.
