Abstract

Communication tradition in Islamic Boarding Schools has its own uniqueness,
there are two types of Islamic Boarding Schools, in Jember there are many Traditional
and Modern Islamic Boarding Schools, and one of the loci in this research is the
Situbondo Traditional Islamic Boarding School, which is still maintaining the old way of
management institutions and curriculum. Then Modern Modern Islamic Boarding
Schools, namely Islamic boarding schools that adhere to integral education ranging from
early childhood education to junior high school, accommodate a number of foster
children (santri) who live inside the hut. This study focuses on the different traditions of
communication that occur in two boarding schools (traditional and modern) with
different characters, then knowing the different ways of communication that are built
between a kiai and a cleric, Ustadz and students, students with religious teachers and
students communication with kiai. The results of this study are finding differences and
similarities from the tradition of communication between traditional pesantren and
modern pesantren. Researchers use the theory of symbolic interaction. The data
collection of this study uses observation, unstructured interviews and documentation
studies. While the data analysis uses data reduction, data display, conclusions and data
verification. The results of this study concluded that the traditional differences between
traditional boarding schools and modern schools were very significant, especially in
terms of the learning curriculum, methods and the education system used.
