Abstract

Kwl strategy is very important for effective on reading comprehension in descriptive text because it indicates the level of the learner's reading comprehension ability. The more words they know, the better they will be at reading. Therefore, it is important to research "The effect of using kwl strategy on reading comprehension in descriptive text at 9th in Smp Al-Qodiri Jember." In this research the problem is " How Kwl is able the students on reading comprehension to read descriptive text at 9th grade of Smp Al-Qodiri Jember by using Kwl?”. And the aim of this research is "To test whether the application of the kwl strategy method influences students' mastery on reading comprehension when describing a text." Based on research problems and relevant theories, the hypothesis of this research is "There is a significant influence of the kwl strategy method on students' reading comprehension." This research uses experimental methods. The sample is class IX-A, totaling 17 students, and IX-B totaling 16 students, so that the total of both classes is 33 students. Data was collected using the reading-test. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the total score and average score of students. Then continued with normality and homogeneity tests. Hypothesis testing was analyzed using the Independent Sample T-test. The significance of the T test results is (0.000), which means it is smaller than (0.005). This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that the kwl strategy has significant effect on students reading comprehension in descriptive text. In other words, kwl strategy has a significant effect on students reading comprehension.
