Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is comprehension of part of the language that contains about words or a set of words that become a foundation in understanding the meaning of language and communication. In this research, it focuses on noun and verb. In this research the problems are first, how can Choral reading method improve the students’ vocabulary mastery of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Kalibaru in the 2018/2019 academic year And second, how can Choral reading method improve the students’ activeness in participating the class of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Kalibaru in the 2018/2019 academic year. The objective of the research referring to the research problems are first, to improve students’ vocabulary mastery of VIII C Class SMPN 1 Kalibaru, Banyuwangi in the 2018/2019 academic year by using choral reading and second, to improve students’ active participation in the class of VIII C grade students of SMPN 1 Kalibaru, Banyuwangi in the 2018/2019 academic year. Based on the research problem and the relevant theory, the hypothesis of this research are first, Choral reading can improve the VIII C students’ vocabulary mastery of SMPN 1 Kalibaru, Banyuwangi in the 2018/2019 academic year and second, Choral reading can improve the VIII C students’ active participation in the class of SMPN 1 Kalibaru, Banyuwangi in the 2018/2019 academic year. The design of research is classroom action research. The research subject is VIII C class consisting of the 32 students. The data are collected by using test and the instrument used is test items. The implementation of Choral Reading method in cycle 1 was do task and all activities individually and in cycle 2 was do task and all activities with small group. The students were active in teaching and learning activities, and they didn’t feel bored again because they can compete with each other. Those caused the result of cycle two achieved the criteria of success. Choral reading improved the students’ vocabulary mastery in two cycles from the percentage of students scored ≥ 75 (E = 0 %) in cycle 1 and in cycle 2 was ≥ 75 (E= 87.5%). The students’ activeness in participating in the class, in the first meeting 68,75% who active and 31,25% who passive. In second meeting, 84,37% who active and 15,62% who passive. The average result of the students, participation are 76,56% who active and 23,43% who passive. Based on the research result, firstly, it can be concluded that choral reading is able to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery to VIII C students at SMPN 1 Kalibaru in 2018/2019 academic year and the second, choral reading is able to improve students’ activeness in participating class to VIII C students at SMPN 1 Kalibaru in 2018/2019 academic year.
