Abstract

The purpose of teaching vocabulary, is to focus students in learning a foreign language at a fundamental level learning a foreign language. However, the problems comes from the way how to acquire the better result in learning vocablulary in class, as the learning pattern in class that being used by the teacher is the the traditional approach or conventional method. Students become passive and the learning process is boring. The teaching process becomes verbalism and create conditions for students to be forced to listen, which makes this learning process ineffective. In order to improve the learning method, there needs to be a way to overcome this. By using the Extensive Reading Approach, the researcher seeks to improve students' vocabulary mastery and active participation. Related to the problems being faced, in this case the researcher concludes a problem, "how does the use of the extensive reading approach increase students' vocabulary mastery at SMPN 01 Ambulu Jember in the 2018/2019 academic year?”, and “How does the use of the extensive reading approach increase students' active participation in teaching learning and process at SMPN 01 Ambulu Jember in the 2018/2019 academic year?” The purpose of this research referring to the research problem is to know how Extensive Reading Approach can improve student’s vocabulary mastery and students’ active participation in teaching and learning process at SMPN 01 Ambulu Jember in 2018/2019 academic year The design of the research is Classroom Action Research: which uses vocabulary test and observation guide as the instrument of the research. The subject of the research is the VII B students which has 30 students. The result of vocabulary test data in cycle 1 was showed that from 12 students, who have scored ≥ 70 was 40%. Meanwhile, the result of observation checklist showed 65,55% students’ active. It means the result did not achieved the target score. The researcher needs to revise lesson plan or strategy in cycle 2. All activities done with the partner both defining unfamiliar words and discussion. In cycle 2 there were 23 students of the students who scored ≥ 70 was 71, 3%. Beside that, the result of observation checklist was 78, 89% students’ active. It means the target score in vocabulary test achieved the target score. The action was stopped because requirement 70% students vocabulary test could achieved the target scored and active participation. It can be concluded that using Extensive Reading Approach can improve the students’ vocabulary mastery by defining word classes and their active participation by paying attention, asking question, answering question and doing the exercise at SMPN 01 Ambulu Jember in 2018/2019 academic year
