Abstract

Speaking is the most critical aspect for students or EFL to master when they are studying English. However, many students still cannot speak English fluently and clearly. There are many ways to practice or learn how to speak English. One way to do this is through a panel discussion. Panel discussion can improve the students’ speaking skills, create ideas, and speak freely. Therefore, it is important to research “The Effectiveness of Panel Discussion on Students’ Speaking Skills in Senior High School.” In this research, the problem is “Does panel discussion have any effects on students' speaking skills in senior high school?” and the objective of this research is “to know the effect of panel discussion on 2nd-grade senior high school students' speaking skills.” Based on the research problem and the relevant theories, the hypothesis of this research is “Teaching speaking skills through panel discussion is effective for senior high school students.” The design of this research is quasi-experimental. The subject of this research was the XI class, consisting of 35 students from each class. The data were collected using a speaking test. The significance of the T-test result is (0,000), which means it is lower than (0,005). That means the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that the answer to the research question is a significant difference in students' speaking skills between students who taught a panel discussion and those who did not. In other words, the panel discussion significantly impacted students' speaking skills.
