Abstract

In the beginning of the research, both of group were given a pre-test to measure the students’ vocabulary mastery in th form of a test consist Vocabulary is the most important thing that students should be mastered when they are learning English. But, many students still find difficulty in learning vocabulary. This research is aims to investigate whether there is or not a significant difference in using mnemonic strategy on seventh grade students’ vocabulary mastery at Mts Negeri 5 Jember in the 2018-2019 academic year.
The design of this research is quasi-experimental research. The subject of this research were 48 students of seventh grade students at Mts Negeri 5 Jember where 24 students of VII B and 24 students of VIID. Class VIIB chosen as the Experimental group which taught by using mnemonic strategy as the treatment while the VIID was choosen as the control group which was taught of 20 questions. The data collecting technique of this research is used Non-randomized control group, pre-test and post-test design. The treatment result showed that experiment group has better means than control group. It can be seen from hypothesis testing result, the significance value is 0,012 which means it is lower that significances level of 5%.
Based on the result, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect in the students vocabulry mastery of the students who were taught with mnemonic strategy. It means that the use of mnemonic strategy has significant effect on the students’ vocabulary mastery.
