Abstract
Reading is one of the important skills in learning English. Learning reading, need process. Besides the students have some problems in comprehending words, sentences and parahraphs. To face these common problems there must be some ways and solutions to improve the students’ reading ability especially in recount text through the available methods, in this case the researcher used Jigsaw Technique to improve reading ability. In this research, there are problems, they were “How can jigsaw technique improve reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Maesan in 2016/2017 academic year?”. How can jigsaw technique improve students’ participation of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Maesan in 2016/2017 academic year?” Based on the problem, the research objective is intended “To improve the eighth grade students’ ability in reading recount text by using Jigsaw at SMPN 1 Maesan in 2016/2017 academic year”. The design of the research is classroom action research. This research covered four stages of activities, they were planning of the action, implementing of the action, observing, and reflecting of the action. This research subject was VIII-B class which consisted of 26 students and to obtain the data instrument used test and observation checklist. This research is supposed to be successful if the average score is 70. Jigsaw technique improved the students’ ability in reading recount text in two cycles from the average of students scored ≤ 70 (M = 64) in the first cycle to (M = 72) in the second cycle. And the percentage of students’ participation (65%) in the first cycle to (84%) in the second cycle Finally, it could be conclude that the use of Jigsaw technique could improve the eighth grade students’ ability in reading recount text at SMPN 1 Maesan in 2016/2017 academic year by giving clear explanation and giving more time in deveoping their ideas in teaching learning recount text to build students’ ideas development.
