Abstract

Reading comprehension is the process of extracting the meaning from a written text. Teaching reading comprehension is challenging because reading is a complex process which is not only acomplished reading a text but also comprehending the whole text. In this research, the problem is “How can the use of 5E learning cycle model improve the students’ reading comprehension at MA Al-Qodiri Jember in 2017/2018 academic year?” and “How can the use of 5E learning cycle model improve the students’ participation in teaching and learning process?”. Based on the research and the relevant theory, The hyphothesis of this research shows that there was an improvement after conducting the action in the teaching and learning process by using the 5E Learning Cycel Model. The design of this research is a classroom action research with two cycles conducted in May 2016. The research procedure used was the spiral method by Kemmis and Mc.Taggart in which each cycle consisted of 4 phases, i.e. planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research subject is the tenth grade of IPA 1 at MA Al-Qodiri Jember consisting of 22 students. The data was obtained from observation, and reading comprehension test. While the criteria of success in this research is 75% which the students could get the score as the minimum requirement standard of curriculum. The percentage of reading comprehension test in the first cycle was 54.5% and the observation checklist was 59%, it means that the result has not been achieved yet. In this case, the research conducted into the second cycle to get better result. Thus, the researcher got the percentage of reading comprehension test cycle two was 81.5% and the observation checklist was 78.5%. It can be concluded that the result of cycle two shows that 5E learning cycle model could imrpove the students of tenth grade IPA I reading comprehension by growing their interest with a picture and discussing the text. It also could improve their activeness by participating the teaching and learning process through 5E learning cycle model at MA Al-Qodiri Jember in 2017/2018 academic year. Key Words: Learning Outcomes, Student’s Participation, Learning Cycle Model.
