Abstract
Code switching and code mixing are important for Thai students have to understand and practice English utterances in daily life. Beside, the ability and habit use other language enriches their communication skills and reveals bilinguality and bilingualism in the society. Therefore, it is important to do a research entitled “do the Thai students use code switching and code mixing, the types and the reason using code switching and code mixing in communication”. In this research, the problem is “do the Thai student use code switching and code mixing, what the types of code switching and code mixing and why the Thai students used code switching and code mixing in communication. The objective of this research referring to find the Thai student use code switching and code mixing or not, the types and the reason of the Thai students use code switching and code mixing in communication. The kind of this research is the nature communication. The research subject is Thai students at University of Muhammadiyah Jember consisting of 11 students. The data are collecting using recorder and interview. The instrument of analyze data is the researcher herself with the language of sociolinguistic. The implementation of code switching and code mixing was displayed in order find the result on Thai students in communication. All of the Thai students were in code switching is tag-switching (5 utterance) and in code mixing is alternation (59 utterance) in the three times. Based on the data result above, it can be concluded they used code switching and code mixing in communication. They can speak 4 languages, include Melayu, Thai, Indonesia and English for understand and practice in communication by Thai students at University of Muhammadiyah Jember in the 2017/2018 academic year Key word: Code switching, Code mixing
