Abstract

The students cannot write well if they do not have a good grammar competence, because they have a lack of confidence that make them feel hard to write.besides, the students sometimes get stuck to develop the topic in their writing,on the contrary, the students who have good competence in grammar. They could be more confident than who are not.because thet know how to make good and proper sentences. Writing is one of the important skills in teaching English. According to Harmer (1998:79) “writing is a basic language skill”. In addition, Writing is considered as a complex skill and difficult to be mastered by the students. grammar deals the form of sentences the smaller units such as clauses, phrases and word. mastery over word have help speaker to communicate their emotion and purpose more effectively The objective of this research is to find out whether there is a significant correlation between writing skill and grammar ability of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Gumukmas in the 2015/2016 academic year. The primary data in this research consist of the data obtained from giving test. After that, the teacher gives them score and it was continued to counting the data. The hypothesis of this research would be tested to know whether or not there was a significant correlation between writing skill and grammar ability. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used to calculate the result of the data analysis found that there was a significant correlation betweenwriting skill and grammar ability, the result showed that the value of Pearson Correlation was .662 it was significance at the level 5% (.05).The result of the research score would be tested with of significance level 5%. The hypothesis of this research has a relationship between writing skill and grammar ability of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Gumukmas in the 2015/2016 academic year. It can be concluded that there is a significant correlation between writing skill and grammar ability of the seventh grade students at SMPN 1 Gumukmas in the 2015/2016 academic year. From the explanation above, it can be said that writing skill and grammar ability were correlated to each other. This implied that writing skill contributed as an important role on the grammar ability of the students. This research confirmed that the existence of grammar ability was really important for successful in writing skill of the students.
