The abilities of the younger generation are a benchmark for the
development of national education. Today's young generation must be able to
understand global developments, and be ready to compete within their own
country and with other nations. Researchers see the existing problem, many
senior high school do not have full attention to the urgency of English, from
here the English learning process must be able to play an active role in
changing the views of students who consider speaking English very difficult.
The research question guiding this study is : how is the implementation
of the EFL program in improving students’ english speaking skills at AlFurqan senior high school jember ? to answer this question, research design
contained is a qualitative descriptive research, to collect data in this study,
researcher used observation, interview and study documentation which was
conducted on students and teacher at Al-Furqan senior high school Jember.
The type of interview in this study is a semi-structured interview while the
observation in this study is non-participant observation where researcher are
directly involved in EFL program activities.
The discussion of the method and strategy that used by teachers in EFL
program in improving students’ english speaking skills are discovery learning
method and cooperative learning strategy. Common mistakes students make
are lack of vocabulary, pronunciation and lack of self-confidence. In this case,
the teacher uses discovery learning which aims to provide independence in
solving a problem and cooperative learning strategy to accustom students to
being active in group which aims to inprove students’ self-confidence.
Based on the results of observations, interviews, documentation studies
and questionnaires, in conclusion, the implementation of the English for Life
program has been running according to its main objective, which are the
teacher used discovery learning method and cooperative learning strategy in
improving students’ english speaking skills.
