Abstract
Emotional intelligence is an important thing for students to have in their learning process, especially reading activities because the presence of good emotional intelligence will be able to control themselves from various factors that are inhibiting interest in reading. Interest in reading has a very important role in the learning process to add more knowledge. Based on the results of the interview it was revealed that students read when there was an assignment because the students felt unhappy when reading so reading was a boring activity, bored and difficult to understand the contents of the reading and less able to engage their emotions while reading. This study aims to determine the effect of emotional intelligence on the reading interest of students of the University of Muhammadiyah Jember. The research method used is associative quantitative. Researchers used the accidental sampling scale to get a sample of 332 students. The research instrument used was a scale of interest in reading and emotional intelligence with a Likert scale using a range of values from 1 to 4. Hypothesis test results using simple linear regression analysis show that H_1 is accepted and H_0 is rejected, which is shown from the results of the hypothesis test with a level of sig 0,000, meaning 0,000 <0.05, it can be said that emotional intelligence influences reading interest in students of Muhammadiyah University of Jember which can be seen from the level of sig 0, 000 which is shown from the results of the calculated R value of 0, 474 or 47.4% with the contribution of the variable R Square 0, 225 or 22.5% or emotional intelligence affect reading interest as much as 22.5%. This study shows that there is a positive influence between emotional intelligence on the reading interest of students of the University of Muhammadiyah Jember. This means that the higher the emotional intelligence possessed by students, the reading interest owned by students will be higher, and vice versa the lower the emotional intelligence the reading interest of students will decrease.
