Abstract

This research was a classroom action research focusing on the use of Crossword Puzzles to improve the eight grade students’ vocabulary achievement. The subjects of this research were the students of the school had experienced difficulties to memorize and understand vocabulary, especially VIII-B class. It can be seen from the mean score of the vocabulary test in preliminary study was 62. And it showed that there were only 11 (39.3%) of the students had reached the standard score (75), while others 17 (60.7%) had failed. In this research, the researcher usedCrossword Puzzles in teaching vocabulary to the students to improve the VIII-B students’ active participationandvocabulary achievement. The vocabulary achievement by using Crossword Puzzles helped the students to enrich their vocabulary. The observation was done during the teaching vocabulary by using Crossword Puzzles in Cycle 1. The average result of the students’ active participation was 67.85%. The target of the students’ active paticipation was not achieved. To know the next progression, the observation was continued to Cycle 2.The students’ participation in cycle 2 was 78.57% and it was achieved. It increased from 67.85% in Cycle 1 to 78.57% in Cycle 2. This research proves that the use of Crossword Puzzles in teaching vocabulary can improve the students’ active participation during the teaching learning process of vocabulary. Meanwhile, based on the mean score of the achievement test in Cycle 1 was 74.3. There was 14(50%) achieved and 14 (50%) did not achieve. The target score of success was (75) in Cycle 1 and itdid not achieved. However, the action was continued to Cycle 2 in order to improve from Cycle 1. In Cycle 2, it was found that the mean score of the students’ vocabulary achievement test by Crossword Puzzles improved from (74.3) in Cycle 1 to (80.37) in Cycle 2. There were 23 (82.14%) could achieve the target score and there were 5 (17.85%) couldn’t achieve the target score. The percentage of vocabulary achievement were (74.3%) in cycle 1 and (80.37%) in cycle 2. It means that the target students’ vocabulary score requirement in this research had been achieved. Based on the result above, Crossword Puzzles could improve students’ active participationand vocabulary achievement at Class VIII-B of SMPN 01 Sukorambi in 2016/2017 academic year.
