Abstract

Speaking is one of the important skills which must be mastered by the Students in learning English. However, many students find speaking as one of the problem that they face when they want to learn English. Therefore, it is important to do research entitled “The Use of Small Group Discussionin improving speaking ability to the X class at SMK BERDIKARI jember in the 2017 / 2018 academic year”. In this research, the problem is “how can Small Group Discussion improve speaking Ability the X class at SMK BERDIKARI jember in the 2017 / 2018 academic year” and the objective of this research referring to the research problem is to find out how Small Group Discussion can improve speaking ability. Based on the research and the relevant theory describe as follows. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is X class consisting of 35 students. The data are collected using interview, direct observing and test and instrument used is test items. In order to analyze the data students’ speaking score, avarage score formula is used. The KKM of the school is 75. The criteria of success is 75 or more than. In designing a Small Group Discussion lesson, teachers should first identify what standards or outcomes they want their students to know by the time they reach aviable conclusion to the problem. By first knowing what outcomes teachers want from their students, teachers can then choose or develop a problem that allows students to successfully reach those assigned standards or outcomes. There are many resources teachers can use in developing a problem for a Small Group Discussion lesson. All of the students were active in teaching and learning activities and enthusiastic does it. The avarage score of cycle 1 is 73, but it is improved in cycle 2 became 80. In short, Small Group Discussion improved the students’ speaking ability in two cycles avarage scored of student is 73 in cycle 1 to 80 in cycle 2. Based on the research result, It can be concluded that Small Group Discussion is able to improve speaking ability at SMK BERDIKARI Jember in the 2017/2018 academic year by using Small Group Discussion to help them to speak The material is about narrative text and discuss the task about making simple conclusion Key Word: Speaking Ability, Small Group Discussion
