The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subjects were eighth grade (VIII B) consisting of 31 students. Data was collected using a test method, and the instruments used were test items and observation checklists. To analyze student data-reading scores and student participation, a percentage formula was used.
Implementation of theme-based teaching is combined with small groups and makes Theme Based Teaching an approach in two cycles. All students are active in teaching and learning activities, and they don't feel bored anymore because they can compete with each other. That causes the results of the second cycle to reach the success criteria. The theme-based teaching approach improve students' reading comprehension in cycles from the percentage of students who scored skor 75 (67.7%) in cycle 1 to (80.6%) in cycle 2.
Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that theme-based teaching can improve students' reading comprehension in SMP Negeri 4 Tanggul in the 2019-2020 academic year.
